April 11, 2024Spirulina- The Green Fairy!
When I hear the word spirulina, I think of a cute little green fairy named Spirulina taking her wand and shaking it over someone’s head to quickly provide them with all of the amazing benefits of this algae. Weird, I know! If only it were that easy. But read on….the funny taste and smell are worth the amazing benefits.
I’ve always seen this stuff at juice bars but had only tried it on my own a few times. Now I’m working really hard to include it in our morning “green” juice and I’ve been pushing it on my friends and family as well.
Spirulina is an algae that’s typically made into a powder or tablet. It’s green in color and doesn’t taste that great (so as my Mom can attest, mixing it into your oatmeal isn’t a good idea)! Your best bet is to add it into a smoothie or “green” juice, but some do mix a tablespoon or so in water or real fruit juice and drink it. It’s also really green and can look gross, but just suck it up, it can be tasteless when blended well with other veggies and some fruit!
Here are my top 10 reasons why I think you should have some everyday;
1.) It has four times the antioxidant ability of blueberries (my favorite)
2.) It has a really high concentration of chlorophyll which helps to remove toxins and heavy metals
3.) It has more protein per gram than beef, poultry, fish and soybeans
4.) It’s great for improving eye health as it has 10 times the Vitamin A concentration per a gram of carrots
5.) It has 26 times the calcium of milk (great for pregnant women)
6.) It’s a great source of B vitamins, Vitamin E and Vitamin K.
7.) It strengthens the immune system
8.) It promotes digestion and healthy bacteria growth in your gut
9.) It helps to improve absorption of nutrients
10.) It’s a great source of the fatty acid GLA which can be helpful in easing PMS symptoms
You can find this at natural food stores or online and it’s really affordable! Go for organic and try to do a spoonful in each smoothie. Good luck!
Cheers to your health
